Our extensive loose leaf black tea range has a little something for all discerning tea fans. Usually stronger than other teas, black teas carry rich flavours, antioxidants, and may improve metabolism and digestion. Black tea is one of the most popular and widely consumed types of tea in the world. It is made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, the same plant used to make green, white, and oolong teas. However, black tea undergoes full oxidation, which gives it its dark colour and rich, bold flavour. It is typically stronger and more robust than other teas, with notes ranging from malty and smoky to fruity and floral. It is dark amber to deep brown when brewed. Its caffeine content is higher than green or white tea but lower than coffee, averaging about 40–70 mg per cup. There are a number of elements to the production process, including withering, where fresh tea leaves are spread out to dry, reducing moisture. Rolling, where the leaves are rolled or crushed to release essential oils. Oxidations, where the leaves are exposed to air, allowing oxidation to develop flavor and darken the leaves and firing/drying where the leaves are heated to stop oxidation and remove excess moisture. Popular types of black tea include: Assam - a malty, strong tea from India, often used in breakfast blends. Darjeeling - a lighter, more floral tea from India, sometimes called the "Champagne of teas." Earl Grey - a black tea flavoured with bergamot oil for a citrusy aroma. English Breakfast - a bold, full-bodied blend often enjoyed with milk and sugar and Lapsang Souchong - a smoked black tea from China with a distinctive, smoky flavour. Health benefits include being rich in antioxidants - black tea contains polyphenols that help fight oxidative stress. Heart health - it is said that this tea may help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease. Improving focus and energy - the caffeine and amino acid L-theanine promote alertness. Supporting gut health - these tea's contain compounds that promote healthy gut bacteria.
